If your goat shows signs of a urinary blockage, early treatment is crucial. Urethral process amputation, removing the tube-like structure at the penis end, may restore urination. This minor surgery involves light sedation and local anesthesia, with minimal aftercare.

Advanced cases might require more complex surgeries. Urinary issues in goats are urgent; delays can lead to emergencies.

Contact us at (209) 358-6000 immediately if you notice any symptoms. More info at https://atwatermercedvet.com/

Urolithiasis in goats, often caused by high-grain and alfalfa diets, can lead to urinary stones, blocking the tract. Common in show or pet goats, symptoms include blood in urine, straining, pain during urination, dribbling, and abdominal pain. Severe cases might show loss of appetite, lethargy, abdominal swelling, or even bladder rupture and death. Immediate veterinary attention is crucial. We believe the purpose of life is to share with others, and our furry friends are no exception. Meet Rita, our brave German Shepherd mix, who recently became a hero by donating blood to save another pet's life during a critical emergency procedure.

Many are unaware that animals, just like humans, may need blood transfusions in the event of severe blood loss. While some emergency offices have blood on hand from blood banks, many general practices, like ours at Atwater-Merced Veterinary Clinics, rely on donations from generous donor animals like Rita.

A donor animal needs to be in good general health and up to date on their vaccinations. Rita, along with her generous owner, stepped up to the plate and allowed us to collect the much-needed blood sample, making a life-saving difference for another pet.

A big shoutout to Rita and her generous owner, for their selfless act that helped save a life. Their kindness and generosity inspire us every day!
